About Dr. Shirley Miles
As an educational consultant with Focal Point, LLC, Dr. Shirley Miles works to enhance New Jersey schools. Through the company, Dr. Miles assists school district administrators in their evaluation of principals and teachers utilizing student achievement to determine success. She assists with other areas such as staff development, curriculum development, and the use of multiple response strategies. Prior to joining Focal Point, Dr. Shirley Miles held various positions in state and federal education systems. As director of the Department of Defense Education Activity, she played a key role in the introduction of the Interstate Compact on Educational Opportunity for Military Children. Furthermore, Dr. Miles served as superintendent of schools for the Tempe Union High School District and as director of human resources for Academy School District 20 in Colorado Springs, Colorado.
Dr. Shirley Miles attended the University of Colorado as an undergraduate and earned a bachelor of science in business administration. She returned to the school to complete her masters of public administration. In 2001, Dr. Shirley Miles earned a doctor of philosophy in curriculum and instruction; she wrote a dissertation titled Serious School Violence and Its Effect on Teacher Retention. Over the past decade, she has continued her professional development by attending conferences held by the American Association of School Administrators, the Military Child Education Coalition, and the Association of Curriculum Development.
