Dr. Shirley Miles leverages more than 25 years of school system and academic improvement experience to serve as a senior consultant for Focal Point, LLC, an organization that helps schools implement systematic improvements. In addition to her professional endeavors, Dr. Shirley Miles volunteers with a number of local charities, including the Care and Share Food Bank for Southern Colorado.
Among its many programs, the Care and Share Food Bank for Southern Colorado maintains a Healthy Kids Club initiative to provide snacks and meals for children who engage in after-school enrichment activities. The program was designed to provide nutritious food to children from low-income backgrounds, and each Care and Share Healthy Kids Club site is located near a school where at least 50 percent of the student population receives free or reduced lunch benefits.
To participate in the Healthy Kids Club, students must join in activities like tutoring, community service, music, or sports programs that have open participation policies. The program is financially supported by the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment. Since its creation, the Healthy Kids Club program has been instituted at 25 sites in Southern Colorado, and this year it will provide more than 5,000 meals and 80,000 snacks to children in the program.
